   6. Find out where you are (and therefore what the nextstage is)

I strongly advise you measure your level using CEFR levels(https://blog...) as these are now standardacross Europe.

If you insteadgive yourself credit every time you feelstupidyou can turn this around. Give yourself a littlemental gold star each time you feel stupid because those momentsare learning moments. Feeling stupid is actually a sign ofprogress, or the moment just prior to progress.

Being self-conscious is your biggest enemy. You cannotspeak a foreign language without feeling stupid at somepoint. You have to get over that. You have to twist yourmouth into strange new shapes that make you feel like a caricature;you will speak and not be understood and you will listen and notunderstand. A LOT. It's really okay and in fact necessary tolearning. If you think about it, what's the big deal? So you lookstupid. Who cares?

5. Practise looking stupid

If you're a complete beginner I find it's really important toabsorb the sounds of the language before beginning serious study. Ilisten to hours of audio (audio books are great for this) withouttrying to understand the content, butstillactivelylistening to the sounds of thelanguage to embed them. I usually find after a while I end upbabbling them a little like a baby which can feel a bit silly .Which brings me my next piece of advice:

4. Prepare for the journey

Expect a lot of fog and confusion for the first few hundred hours. It'scompletely normalandyou're notstupid. EVERYONE feels this way, even the people who seemreally gifted at languages. The difference is, anyone who's alreadybeen through that and reached the sunlightexpectsthis stage, and it doesn't phase them because they know they'll getthere eventually. So, if you catch yourself saying things like,"I'm rubbish at French" or "I'm stupid" just stop for a moment andremind yourself that you're neither and you will get it if youpersevere.

I've used sunlight in this mountain metaphor to give you anindication ofhow it feelsto be at these levels. It's not until B1/B2 that the light comes out andit startsto feel really good speaking French. That happens aroundthe 350⑷00 hours mark if you've never learned a second languagebefore.

3. Be kind to yourself

To use my mountain metaphor, the ground is icy and slippery and ifyou go slowly, you'll slip back as much as you progress. The faster you can climb, the less you will slipback.

This is a double-whammy. 1) Immersing yourself as deeply aspossible in the subject allows you to rack up the hours as quicklyas possible. 2) Memory fades unless it's used. Low-intensitystudies (i.e. school French) are ineffective because theirintensity is so low thatyou end up forgettingalarge percentage of what you learn. So, try to learn as intenselyas time will permit you to.

2. Intensity is vital to learning a languagequickly.

At the other extreme,if you study really intensively, youcan rack up 40 hours in one week! It's possible (but notguaranteed) to achieve fluency in ten to twelve weeks at that rate. Most people don't have the spare time to give that level ofintensity, but understanding the journey helps you berealisticabout what you can achieve so you won'tget demotivated.

Here's what most teachers won't tell you:It takes 600+hours of study & practice to reach fluencyin French(unless you already speak another latin-based language - aso-called romance language). Think about this. If (say) you learn 1hour of French per week, then in forty weeks you'll do 40 hours. You'll needfifteen yearsat that rate to becomefluent, not counting all the stuff you forget because of the gapsbetween study. (Harder languages like Russian or Mandarin can take1,200 hours!)

I think of learning a language a bit like climbing a mountain (alarge but easy mountain, the sort that anyone can climb so long asthey keep going).

I'm going to use a metaphor that I hope will help you get theknack.

Myth Bust 2) Everyone is naturally good atlanguages. You already learned one, remember? You've justforgotten how long it took.

Myth Bust 1) Learning a language isn't hard. It's justLONG.

One of the biggest reasons cited for abandoning is that studentsdon't feel any sense of progression. A GCSE student with an A* willvisit France and find they can't even have a basic conversation.People largely give up because they had thewrongexpectationsset.

Myth 2)Other people (but not them) are naturallygood at languages.

Myth 1)Learning languages is hard.

People almost always wrongly conclude two things from this:

Language learning has an appalling abandonment rate. A mere 4% ofstudents embarking on language courses in schools achieve a basiclevel of fluency after three years. 96% fail to achieve fluencyand/or abandon courses completely!

1. Understand the Language Learning Journey

【GruffDavies】

Hope that's helpful!

I've found that every hour I invested in learning about learningpaid off many times over in my learning speed of actual content. There's general stuff that you can learn about learning that worksfor everyone, and then there are your own personal learning tricksthat can develop; this is about just taking time to reflect on whatwork best for you and thinking about how to improve on what you'redoing.

13. Learn about learning

And make sure the fuel you're putting into your body and brain isgood for it. Eating healthily, just like exercise, has amazingcognitive benefits. If you ever get 'brain fog', you might want topay more attention to what you're eating and drinking. Ask yourselfwhat you consumed in the previous 24⑷8 hours. Yep, it can take asmany astwo daysfor something you ate or drank toaffect your cognition.

We tend to think of our brains as separate from our bodies, but ofcourse the brain is part of body. If you exercise, you get hugemental benefits. It might sound bizarre, but keeping fit will helpyou learn a language. You can even combine the two efforts bylisten to French audio during a workout or run.

12. Exercise & Nutrition

11.就寝

Sleep is vital to memory. In fact, research showsthe time of day that you sleep is not that important. Daytimenapping is very effective.Don’t deprive yourself ofsleepfor too long after you've learned or practisedsomething. When you sleep your brain starts to build structures toturn short-term memories into long-term memories. It may bedifferent for you, but I've found that after about seven nights ofsleep is about the amount needed (with daily practise) for a textto be effortless to recall.

11. Sleep

Give yourself a weekto learn the piece. Why?Because after seven nights ofsleep, somethingmagical happens...

Listen to the piece at least ten times(repetition) before starting to try to learn it. Start to commit itto memory (practise recall). You'll find thisveryhardat first and it will show you just how important itis to practise recall.

As you progress you can pick longer texts and learn a fewparagraphs, or pages of dialogue at a time. I like using film ortheatre texts, or books I liked as a kid which are also goodbecause the language is usually ***.

Pick a text ona subject you find interestingandat the right level for you (i.e. a bit challenging but not toohard). If you're a beginner keep it short, i.e. a few sentences ata time. Graphic comics are really good for beginners (things likePeanuts) which you can order online.

Find a text that you can learn in a week (you must haveaudio- this is essential).

This is my number one trick and I've found this to besingularly the most effective method in acquiring alanguage rapidly.

10. Rote learn set texts in French

If we combine these point (especially 8 and 9) there is an obviousconclusion:the quickest way to learn a language that I havefound is to...

All of this is building towardsmy ultimate languagelearning trick.

Our site, Kwiziq French offers thousands of tests which will adaptautomatically to you and measure your progress at each level, aswell as telling you what to do next to improve. The reason testingworks so well is because it forces you topractiserecallingwhat you know.

If you can, the best way is of course topractise speakingwith a real French person. (If you can, go to the countryand spend time there, preferably with people who don't speak anyEnglish.)

Anything you do to practice recall is going to help yourFrench.

Practising recall has proven to be300% moreeffectivethan revising something. In other words, youmust challenge yourself to "produce" French, not just comprehendit. The metaphor I use for memoryis a field oflong grass. You drop lots of things in it, but to make them easy tofind again, you must practise retrieving them. Every time you do,you tread down the path to the thing you're recalling and it getseasier to follow.

9. Recall is more important than revision

Repetition is absolutely vital to learning most things butespecially important when learning a language. It sounds boring butit doesn't need to be. More on this in a moment. One more time, just in case you didn't get it:repetition is vital tolearning.

8. Repetition, Repetition, Repetition

There are similar diplomas for most languages.

DILF, DELF and DALF - Everything you need to know aboutFrench Diplomas.

It's really worth while registering to take DELF / DALF exams whichare French exams that match the CEFR levels:

Set longer terms goals like passing a specific CEFR level.

Short term goalscan be as *** as how manyhours of study you will do each week. If you (say) want to studyone hour a day then write seven boxes on a sheet and every hour youstudy, check a box. It feels good and you're measuring progresswhich is visible to you even when you don't feel like you'reprogressing.

Goal setting (andmeasuring progressagainst thosegoals) is one of the most effective tools in your learning arsenal.I highly recommend settingshort term and longer termsgoals.

Plan your language learning journey in stages. You've seen how longthe journey is, so just like climbing a mountain, it's advisable toplan the journey in stages.

7. Set goals

(*Kwiziq is an A.I. Language Coach that will assess your leveland then help you improve.)

https://

If you want find out approximately what level you are, you can takethe Kwiziq French test here:

I strongly advise you measure your level using CEFR levels(https://blog...) as these are now standardacross Europe.

6. Find out where you are (and therefore what the nextstage is)

Ilisten to hours of audio (audio books are great for this) withouttrying to understand the content, but stillactivelylistening to the sounds of the languageto embed them. I usually find after a while I end up babbling thema little like a baby which can feel a bit silly . Which brings memy next piece of advice:

4. Prepare for the journey

3. Be kind to yourself

Find a text that you can learn in a week (you must haveaudio- this is essential).

6. Find out where you are (and therefore what the nextstage is)
